New and creative ideas can help the classifieds become more successful. The start of a new year brings change for industries all across the United States—especially the newspaper industry. With the internet becoming more prominent, it is no surprise that the printed classified section is up for a much-needed makeover. According to Reinventing Classifieds, Bill Ostendorf, "long-time newspaper designer and advertising consultant," has many ideas on saving printed newspaper classifieds. Here are some of his suggestions on how the classifieds can be improved for readers:
• "In the Sports section, add a featured grid of cars for sale. These ads can be from the regular Auto classified section, in which advertisers have paid an extra upsell fee to be included in the Sports section."

• "In the Gardening section, include upsold ads from nurseries, landscape designers and landscape construction companies."

• "Doing regular category classified specials, such as a weekly wedding and engagement ad to accompany editorial content in the Lifestyles section."

Other ideas:
• In the Business section, include ads from companies looking to hire. Advertisers can also have artwork added to their ad as part of the extra upsell fee.

• Include houses for rent/sale in special bridal sections.
