Robust classified Web sites have been strong competitors for the newspaper classifieds, and as a result, newspapers are beginning to redesign their classifieds to help regain print readers. “The age of the pure-advertising classified section appears to be coming to a close…” according to Editor and Publisher. “So what to do with print classifieds? Turn them into an appealing ad-editorial mix that gets readers flipping though the pages even if they’re not looking for anything specifically.”

Some newspapers have been trying a combination of classifieds with editorial features. This content has included the following:
• A feature story about an ice cream worker
• Daily reader-submitted photo
Crossword puzzle and other puzzles
• Comics
Horoscopes
• TV listings grid
Careers Q&A feature
Automotive feature stories
