August 9 is National Garage Sale Day. Gretchen Herrmann, an economic anthropologist who has studied garage and yard sales for decades, estimates that $4 billion is exchanged in nine to 10 million garage sales each year. August’s warm weather prompts deep cleaning, which means stuff to sell, so be sure to get in on the garage sale craze. Ad/Promotion Ideas:
• Each weekend, create a map of garage sales throughout the month of August. Participants can be included on the map by placing a small ad in your classified section.
• Don’t forget to take the ads online. Interactive features could include photos of hard-to-find items for sale (e.g. antique beds) or of the host’s home (to make it even easier to find).
• Create a garage sale special section that includes things like “Garage Sale Strategy,” “Finding Great Deals,” “Garage Sale Survival Kit” and more. Include garage sale ads in the section along with ads promoting garage sale supplies.
• In honor of Garage Sale Day, offer anyone who advertises their garage sale a free sign or make a kit with price labels and balloons to advertise placing ads during the week of August 9 (if your publication doesn’t already do so).
• Run a sig ad to promote local garage sale sellers who are donating their profits to a charity. Maybe related businesses will match a dollar amount or percent of the earnings.
• Find out if your local government has any laws restricting garage sales. For example, some cities won’t allow more than one sale to occur at time on the same street. If there are no such rules, use garage sale freedom in your promotion.
