September 4 is Newspaper Carrier Day. Newspaper Carrier Day honors Barney Flaherty, the first newspaper carrier hired in 1833, as well as all current newspaper carriers. According to the NAA, “Every day more than 55 million newspapers are delivered in America. That’s nearly 41,000 newspapers delivered every minute of every day.” There are “hundreds of thousands” of newspaper carriers across the country that deserve a big hearty “Thanks!” from your readers.

Ad/Promotion Ideas:
• Create a Carrier of the Year award. Place the ballot both in print and online, and then have readers cast their vote for their favorite carrier. To carry the contest even further online, post videos in which subscribers on their route tell why their carrier deserves to win.

• Seek out readers who are willing to write a letter of thanks to their carrier to be published in the paper. Contact a neighborhood association to buy an ad for the whole neighborhood thanking their carrier.

• Create a sig ad where readers can buy space as a way to say thanks.

Tell us about it!
Have you tried this approach before? Did you get positive feedback from newspaper carriers and their subscribers? Explain. Post your experiences as a comment, and let’s work together to increase your ad sales.
